In-Mold Decorating
In-Mold Decorating (IMD) is a manufacturing process that integrates graphics directly into a molded plastic part. Before the molding cycle begins, a printed label is precisely placed inside the mold with an end-of-arm tool. As hot resin is injected into the mold, it bonds with the graphic, creating a finished product where the decoration becomes a permanent part of the component.
Think of it this way: instead of applying a label after the part is made, the label becomes part of the part itself.
The result is a durable, high-quality graphic that won't peel, lift, or wear away like conventional labels might do.
How the Process Works
A printed film or label is positioned inside the mold, held in place with a static charge.
Molten plastic is injected behind the label.
The resin and label bond during the molding cycle.
The finished component is fully decorated and ready for use.
Advantages of IMD & Why Manufacturers Choose It
Eliminates secondary decorating steps such as stamping, printing, or label application.
Graphics are highly resistant to scratches, abrasion, and wear.
Produces a premium appearance with consistent quality from part to part.
Reduces manufacturing time, labor, and overall production costs.
Eliminates label edges or "label lip" that can deteriorate over time.
For products that demand long-term performance in challenging environments, IMD delivers both durability and visual appeal.
What Goes Into a Successful In-Mold Label?
Not all in-mold labels are created equal. Construction depends on how and where the finished product will be used. Before recommending a solution, we work to understand your application's performance requirements.
Key questions include:
Will the product be used outdoors?
What chemicals, cleaners, or contaminants will it encounter?
How will the label be loaded and retained in the molding tool?
Are you using robotic end-of-arm tooling or manual placement?
These factors help determine the optimal material, ink system, coatings, and construction for the project.
The Romo Testing Advantage
At Romo Durable Graphics, every label construction is evaluated to ensure it meets the performance demands. Our R&D testing process helps verify that graphics perform as expected throughout the life of the product.
Static Performance
Labels must separate cleanly in production while maintaining enough static charge to stay securely positioned in the tool during molding.
Ink Adhesion
Certain in-mold substrates can present printing challenges. We verify that inks bond properly to ensure long-term graphic integrity.
Ink Flexibility
During molding, labels experience expansion, contraction, and forming stresses. Inks and protective coatings must remain flexible to prevent cracking or failure.
Chemical Resistance
We evaluate how graphics perform when exposed to chemicals, cleaners, solvents, and other environmental conditions specific to the application.
Abrasion Resistance
Using industry-standard methods such as Taber abrasion testing, we measure how well graphics withstand repeated wear and contact over time.
Stain Resistance
Products exposed to oils, dirt, cleaning agents, or other contaminants require graphics that maintain their appearance and readability.
Water Resistance
Whether the product encounters moisture, washdowns, outdoor weather, submersion, or dishwasher environments, we validate performance under real-world conditions.
Long-Term Durability
One of the most common questions we hear is: How long will the graphic last outdoors?
The most accurate test is real-world exposure over an extended period. However, product development timelines rarely allow months or years of field testing. That's why Xenon accelerated weathering chambers is used to simulate the effects of sunlight, moisture, heat, and cold in a compressed timeframe.
While no laboratory test can perfectly replicate every field condition, accelerated testing provides valuable performance data and helps predict long-term durability.
Built Around Your Requirements
The Research & Development team at Romo Durable Graphics continuously evaluates new materials, ink systems, and label constructions to improve performance and expand design possibilities.
Whether your product requires exceptional outdoor weatherability, chemical resistance, abrasion protection, or a premium appearance, we'll work with you to develop an in-mold graphic that meets your manufacturing goals and performance standards.
At Romo, we don't just print labels. We engineer durable graphics designed to perform for the life of your product.
